We are witnessing a progressive shift if not a total handover of control from humans to machines, but a rebalancing of agency in many domains. The rise of AI systems, especially those with autonomous decision-making capabilities, is changing the dynamics of control in many profound ways. In this chapter, we examine why this shift matters, how it isn’t just technological, but philosophical too. As machines take on more control, we must guard against losing the human essence in decision-making. The loss of user autonomy is a key concern, more so in AI-driven interfaces like speech with regard to brain–computer interfaces or personalized assistants, where extrapolative algorithms can shape outputs, limiting users’ genuine expression or control. This can severely undermine intellectual privacy, self-representation, and responsibility. Designing AI systems with mechanisms that provide users with initiation signals, explanation tools, and customizable behavior is essential to embedding user control. As AI systems become more pervasive, the nature of human interaction with technology is undergoing a profound transformation—one where traditional interfaces and explicit controls are quietly fading into the background. This shift is driven by the increasing autonomy, adaptability, and embedded intelligence of AI systems, which are designed to anticipate needs, make decisions, and operate with minimal human intervention.
